Drive-By Blogging

I had a lovely post planned out.

It was gonna have pictures and everything.

But several minor-ly disastrous events have caused the postponement of said post.

Instead, before I very quickly grab something to eat before people arrive for Bible study, I leave you with my last two Facebook updates and a picture to be explained tomorrow (pending the arrival and departure of the internet fixer man that will be here between 8am and 8pm tomorrow...)

Dear laptop that I have loved so long,
I realize you are quite old now. I remember picking you out five years ago and I know that five years in people time is like 90 years in computer time. But, even as old as you are, you are the best computer we have in this house. And you cannot give up yet! I promise that one day we will let you rest but right now I am so close to having my craft room perfect and, due to Pinterest, free online patterns, awesome online tutorials, Craftsy, the owning of a computer controlled embroidery machine, and some computer stuff for my Cricut, you, best computer in the house, computer that I love, have become an integral part of having my craft room just so. Also, I have just started blog in again and I cannot continue without your cooperation.
Please, please don't die yet.
Thank you,
Your loving owner,
B

Ode to a computer, part 2:
Dear amazing laptop,
I am so happy to say that you remain the best computer in our house.
In the future, I would appreciate it if you didn't randomly decide to do 81 updates and then subsequently decide they are too much for you and revert back. Next time, can we not have a heart stopping moment and just not update?
Thank you so much for continuing to be awesome and thank you in advance for not scaring me half to death ever again,
B

Hopefully, tomorrow goes better and I can get a real post in!

Mount Everest

The number of views my Revival week post has gotten is now almost as many as the I Know Him post.

Craziness.

Apparently people really identify with the absence of appreciation for the sound person.

Or a couple people shared it on Facebook and people got curious.

Whatever.

Yes, I know that today I have 5,000 loads of laundry to fold and preparation for town and (I don't think I mentioned this one) but a couple days catch-up to play with my Bible study "homework" but I have done none of that so far today.

Also, it's 43 degrees right now with a "feels like" of 35 because of the wind.  Please understand that I hate the hot and am totally fine with the cold so I am not complaining, but I'm just a tad confused.  Isn't it May?!? I was wearing shorts and short sleeves yesterday! The a/c was going! I can't recall ever running the heater in MAY before! It's good for the dog though, because we discovered yesterday while she was inside that she is in heat.  You can really only tell on my gold carpet here in my craft room, and really there's no making that look any worse so its OK.  (Also, we need some major prayer intervention because we have always intended to have her fixed but we keep spending money on things like people medical bills and have not had any to spend on puppy medical bills and now she's in heat and there are lots of stray dogs in this town and just dang it...) The point is, she's all black and it was hot outside and now she can't come inside for a little while and I am of the opinion that she is a dog and she has shade and water and she can take care of herself but Robert wants her to come inside when it's really hot and I don't usually mind letting her inside and would let her in if she wasn't in heat so its good that its not hot.  (Yes, I know that was a run on sentence.)

I wanted to show you the stairs one must climb to reach the sound booth.  (See? I can write a proper sentence.)  As I told my Danish friend yesterday, there are no mountains in Norway as steep as those stairs. And here's the thing--you have to go DOWN some stairs just to get to the stairs to go UP to the sound booth.  It's like this: to get into the front door of the church, you have to go up outside stairs, then up the stairs to the sound booth.  BUT if you went in the back door because you had to go to the office first or whatever, the door opens onto the landing that's halfway up the stairs, so you go up half a flight of stairs.  Then, you walk through the sanctuary, going slightly uphill, and out the main doors to the sanctuary, down a few stairs, up a couple steps, open the door to the sound booth and go up those stairs.  Here, I took some pictures:

Down the stairs first
Up these stairs to the door

These stairs are so cramped and steep, I couldn't actually get a picture.  My foot is just barely bigger than the treads and the risers are pretty much the same size.  If I stick my elbows out when I climb the stairs, they touch the walls on both sides.

Trying to show how steep they are.

Trying to show how many there are, but this is  cutting off some of the bottom stairs.

And then at the top, you have to turn and take one more step up.
It's kind of crazy.  And I climbed them somewhere between 8 and 8,000 times yesterday.

BUT I won.  The monitors work, the recording works, the computer is playing through an actual channel that has a slider and l/r and not just a knob to control the volume and it's all good.

And my pants should fit better today.

Revival Week

We've been having a revival at our church since Sunday.  It ends tomorrow.  For me, it has meant being at the church from 6:15-9:00ish yesterday and today and tomorrow to run sound.  Plus be there from noonish to 1:00ish to listen.

I have come up with a new rule of ministry-if you are going to do anything on the stage as a ministry (preach, music minister), take a turn in the sound booth first!!!  Off that soapbox now.

You know what?  Not off the soapbox, rant coming.  Let me just break the week down like this:

Saturday 4/27
Soundcheck...sort of

Sunday 4/28
9:45 Set up soundbooth
10:00 Set up Sunday School classroom
10:15 Teach Sunday School
10:35 Take Sunday School kid to the nursery, get the low down on the PowerPoint, etc.
10:45 Start background music and announcements on screen, Sunday School lets out
10:55 Get music for service (!!!)
11:00 Start service
12:20ish Service over
Everyone goes to lunch until close to 2
Get some rest
Start a project in the house
Find a dead mouse (eww)
5:15 Get back up to church, start setting up sound
6:45 Get video, several songs, and power point to play, amaze someone that I can in fact start his music as the video ends even though he is giving them to me on separate CDs (hello iTunes!) attempt to get it all on the computer, communicated, and ready to roll by 7...
7:00 Start service
8:something Go home and crash
10:something Get a second wind and attempt to do a couple things
Go to bed way too late

Monday 4/29
9:something Get up
Get some stuff done
Noon Go up to church, no soundboard, just listen to the guy, realize he looks just like my Daddy will look in a few years, it's his Doppelganger
1:00 Come home, get some more stuff done
3:30 Decide to rest awhile, check the mail first, open R's package and read the entire book
5:00 Realize I have stuff to do still and pick up and dust the house
6:00 Get re-dressed for leaving the house
6:15 Go up to the church to do sound
6:45 Again, actually get all the stuff to do during service including a picture to get off a flashdrive and music from two CDs to burn
7:00 Frantically finish things and start
9:00ish Go eat with a bunch of people
10:00 Get home
Get interested in something (I can't even remember) and end up going to bed way, way too late again

Tuesday 4/30
10:something Get up
Get nothing done, read some blogs
10:45 Frantically realize the time and get dressed
Noon:05 Make it up to church
1:00 Come home, get stuff done
2:30 Robert asks me to come to the church and talk about VBS
3:00 Go to Sonic
3:15 Work on VBS meeting a little, clean the bathroom
5:00 Decide to fold clothes while watching TV but end up only watching TV
6:15 Go up to church
6:45 Get stuff, asked to fix the monitors because sound isn't coming through and the singer can't hear his music, frantically try while getting lots of unhelpful advice from technologically inept people asking things like "is it plugged in?"
7:00 Start without resolving monitor issue (mics go through it, computer sound isn't going through)
9:00ish Get invited to supper and decide to go home instead (and rant, although that wasn't my original intent)

Wednesday 5/1
Noon Service
Stay at church and work on Sunday and VBS  meeting
Have some sort of youth thing that will involve me doing sound but I'm not even sure when it is or where it is
Revival, do sound (I guess? Still not sure where I'll be with the youth thing, etc.)
Go home, get a couple things done (I have seriously strived to do a load of laundry and unload the dishwasher every day.  The laundry often does't get folded till later, but it has made life easier if I stick to it)

Thursday 5/2
Get stuff done
Prep for going to the store
Figure out exactly how much we will have to spend on glasses
Work on the VBS meeting
Fold about a week's worth of laundry

Friday 5/3
Go to town
-Bank
-Eye appointment

-Tractor Supply for dog food
-Meet a former youth who moved away for a movie
-Go to HEB and shop for the whole month, plus get 12cents off/gallon of gas
Go home
-Unload and put away a month's worth of groceries
Work on the VBS meeting

Saturday 5/4 (May the 4th be with you!)
Noon Go up to church and prep for the meeting
2:00 Lead the VBS meeting
4:00ish Clean up the VBS meeting
Still have to prep for Sunday School

The music and speaking have been WONDERFUL this week at Revival, but I will be so, so happy when its next week and my time is "mine" again!

I feel like the VBS meeting and VBS itself is just racing towards us but there are so many other things going on that I haven't been able to work on them.  But I think most of May will be available to spend on VBS and that will help.

Meanwhile, I've done NOTHING to the living room curtains.  They may never be done.  Which is sad because there are other sewing projects I'm really looking forward to doing!

So, BUT So...

Look, two in a row! (SHHH, don't tell you that I wrote this as part of yesterday's post and it was so long I broke it up and scheduled this one.  I'm NOT currently in The Big City getting tires put on my car and doing some shopping.)

I'm currently working on a project (see? that's what I'm doing right now!) that will possibly take into the next century to finish and I have banned myself from doing other projects until it's done because it's like motivation to get it done.  Except I'm not so sure the ban is working.

I got a serger for Christmas and I LOVE it but I didn't know much about how to use it, other than to finish edges.  Then, I found an AWESOME class on Craftsy done by Amy Alan called Beginner Serging (that I got on sale!) and I have totally fallen IN LOVE with my serger.

I put the class on hold because I don't have the decorative threads I want for the last two projects and began planning my living room curtains.  I had fabric left from the pillows I made, some brown canvas from another project, a burgundy canvas I'd bought for something else and then changed my mind about, and lots of fabric samples from a friend that was organizing a drapery shop and was getting rid of the outdated samples (or something like that).  So, I had lots of little pieces and some bigger pieces of many different but coordinating fabrics and I wanted to make a larger piece out of it.

(The remainder of this post is an odd cause and effect repetition that started out unintentional and for some reason, I can't stop.)

So, I decided to try my hand at quilting.  (Something along the lines of "I can sew, how hard can it really be?! may or may not have gone through my head.  I plead the fifth.)  Not really quilting, actually.  Piecing a quilt top that I have no intention of turning into a quilt.

BUT you have to be crazy superwoman perfect with cutting for this to work out.

So, I cheated.  I bought a 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch ruler.

BUT some of the samples were not that big.

So, I decided that all pieces should be exactly 12 1/2" wide and the length was just whatever.

BUT some of the samples were not even that big.

So, I had to sew pieces together and then cut them into the base 12 1/2" wide size.  Since my serger was all set up and I am now totally in love with it, I just had to use the serger to make the squares.  I'm not sure what was up with the tension (I suspect I didn't have one of the needle threads all the way into the tension disk, Amy would be so proud I figured that out) but when I went to press the square, it had a faux flatlock
(the link is a real flatlock) look.

BUT it looked really cool.

So, I decided to go with it.  Anyways, I did this to a HUGE pile of fabric. Until I thought I had enough squares.  Some were very simple (12 1/2 by 12 1/2 brown canvas, for example), some a little more busy (12 1/2 by 12 1/2 floral, stripes, paisley, etc., for example), and some a little complicated (the whole "sewn together" ones).  Then I laid them out on the curtain panels I was using as a base size and also plan to use as the back lining.

BUT I was a few short.

So, I went back to the cutting.  I laid them all out again and got them how I wanted (colors fairly evenly spaced, not too plain or too busy, not too visually heavy in spots, between each curtain and each "stripe" of the curtain) and sewed those squares together.

BUT I had used my serger for something else (before I made the rule about not doing anything else until the curtains are done!) and now it was serging regular (no threads showing on top when I pressed the piece.)

So, I played with the tensions until it looked the same (added a page to my Stitch Book! Amy would be so proud!) and sewed all the strips together.  This was incredibly tedious.  It turns out not everything was EXACTLY 12 1/2 inches no matter how careful I tried to be.  I actually had to pin things.  And be specific.  It got done though, somehow.  Then, I laid them back on my liners to start deciding where to put each "strip."

BUT then I realized three across was not quite wide enough.

So, I went away and may have cried a little.

BUT that got nothing accomplished and really want to finish them.

So, I came up with a solution.  Using the "main" fabrics (the ones I used for the pillows plus the burgundy and brown canvas) and my 3 by 18" ruler (I did math first, but I was pretty determined to make it work with a ruler I already had so I didn't have to do special measuring) I cut enough fabric to make 2 skinny strips to go between the 3 fat strips.  And then I sewed all THOSE together into strips.

BUT then I couldn't decide how to arrange them all, especially since it was hard to see all of it at once because nowhere in my house is really big enough to put four curtain panels down on the floor at once without moving furniture.  Plus I was being super indecisive.

So, I took the whole project up to church one Saturday night and had a couple youth girls help me place all the strips. I was excited at this point, thinking I was surely more than halfway done.  (Somehow, I can't seem to remember that I'm basically making my own fabric and, once that's done, I actually have to turn that fabric into the curtains still...)  "We" (read "someone else came up with this idea and I'm totally taking credit") were super smart and realized we could roll the fabric strips up in the curtains to keep everything in its place.  I took it home and, even though it was late, rolled a curtain out, intending to start sewing strips together.

BUT I realized that the strips needed to be slightly larger than the liner and the fat strips were just a hair too short.  And since it was rather late (and I truly want them to be as long as possible), I decided to add length to the fat strips instead of taking length off the liner.  It may have been a moment of insanity because I feel compelled to continue now.

So, I added the length and sewed one skinny strip to one fat strip before I couldn't keep going.  I rolled it back up so it wouldn't get destroyed laying on the floor, fully intending to work on it again Sunday.

BUT I didn't.  And then Monday was the first day of the Bible study I started having weekly at my house and I wanted my whole house to be clean to make a good first impression (so that I could subsequently slack off).

So, I cleaned rather than crafted.  I hate those days.  Which is probably why my house is never disgusting but it never all clean at the same time.  Tuesday I had time to sew.

BUT my house was actually clean and I didn't want to mess it up! (Also, I was exhausted because April has been a bat-crap-crazy kind of month and I'm thinking things are speeding up instead of slowing down!)

So, after several days (or, you know, maybe a week, who can be sure?), I began again.

BUT I only got as far as finishing the "fabric" for one panel and then I fizzled out again. : )

I'm blaming the fact that I wanted to switch quickly between my serger and sewing machine and that it was too hard, but just tonight Robert helped me hang the corner shelf that frees up more desk space and allows me to run ALL THREE machines at once (if I were so talented) so, in the future, that can no longer be an excuse...

It's Been A Long Time, My Friends...

One day, I'm gonna get the hang of this whole "blog" thing.

I'm pretty sure it's not today.

Don't hold your breath.

I was thinking about all the things I've done recently and how I love to read tutorials on other people's blogs and how I could do that.

Then I realized I rarely take pictures of my processes.

In fact, I'm lucky if I take a before and after shot.

I've been trying to get over my camera issues, though.

(How many one sentence paragraphs can I do in a row?)

(Apparently, 9.)

(Unable to resist the urge to make it 10.)

Moving on.

(Crap, now it's 12.)

Continuing the list-like theme, here are the things that have changed since last time:

  • I started a part-time job.
  • I left the part-time job. (They didn't seem to think that little things like employment laws or Minimum Standards applied to them.  I disagreed and, rather than rock the boat anymore, decided to leave.  Plus it was a long drive with expensive gas and wasn't really worth it.)
  • I volunteered to teach preschool Sunday School (by which I mean the one preschooler we have at our church.)
  • I decided that I missed "my" Bible study and wanted to start one here.  We are meeting Monday nights at my house (I thought that would be more inviting to some, if we continue, I plan to use the church.  I think our poor church building is sorely under-used.) and doing the "Restore My Heart" study by Denise Glen.  Each week, I'm supposed to give them a trinket to remember what we talked about.  Instead, I'm making them make their own! (Actually, I thought it'd be great fun but I'm having more fun than they are.)
  • I volunteered to help direct VBS.  R also volunteered.  But he's going to lead Rec during VBS so he's more of a planning co-director and it will be all me come VBS week.  (Prayers for a smooth week! Actually, we are feeling major pressure as we are used to doing VBS quite differently than this church and the fact that we are planning this early is new to them but to us it feels like we are running way behind!)
  • Last Sunday, my one preschooler was sick so I started cleaning out my room.  I was nearly late to church (and I run sound!) but nowhere near done.
  • So after a couple more hours Sunday and a couple more hours this week, I have cleaned out a shopping cart full (literally!) of stuff that needed to live in the Resource Room and completely rearranged the classroom (switching some furniture between rooms, too.).  I still need to put things up on the walls and replace the chairs I stole from the other room. (Our church has a closet where lonely preschool chairs have gone to die.  I'm seriously not sure why they are all in the closet and not in the classrooms, but I found them and will use them.)  I also am on a hunt for some supplies for the room.  A stapler, for example.
That's probably not everything, but it's all I can come up with.  There's also upcoming things like TWO youth camps (both of which I'm also going to) and various youth trips.  I'd love to make a trip to see my family or have them come see me, but life has been too busy all around.  AND

I GET TO GO TO DISNEY WORLD!!!!

In September.

I'm so excited.

And now that there's an odd symmetry to my post, I'm going to end it.

 Branalyn

(Yes, I know I need to fix the whole background thing.  But I was attached and it took a long time to get the blog how I wanted and now they changed how to do that kind of stuff and I just haven't fixed it yet.  Sorry.)

I Know Him

So I saw this posted on Facebook.  And, after reading it, I thought "I taught Adam Lanza."

When I worked at a childcare center as a 3 year old teacher (before working at WEE), I had a little boy in my class that I will call "Bryan" for the purposes of this post.

I had a class of 13 at the beginning of the year (by myself, up to 15 is legal).  One of those came to me about 10 am from public school.  She had Cystic Fibrosis and had some very special needs (seizures, not potty trained, developmentally about 18 months in a 3 year old body and in a class full of 3 year olds).  It was already difficult to give all the children the attention they needed with my CF friend and I asked for an aide.  I did not get one.

About a month in, they moved a little girl from another classroom into mine because the girl's teacher refused to "deal with her" anymore.  She had a single mother who was pregnant.  Her behavior was understandable and, with some attention, manageable.  But it was getting even harder to split my attention.

Then, a few weeks later, I got Bryan.  Bryan came to us from another school, where he had been asked to leave.  He was put in my class because I had the opening (he made the 15th) but my director said she thought I'd be able to handle him best.  (To this day I'm not sure if she meant it or was just buttering me up...)  I had asked for an assistant before, but after Bryan came along, I asked more and more often.  Eventually, after seeing his behavior, I got one.  She was in other classes more often than mine, because they preferred to move people around to getting a sub.  I agree that it's cheaper that way, and I did get paid more an hour there than any other place, but it was not a good choice except from a business standpoint.

From the beginning, Bryan behaved differently than the other children.  He was the sweetest child in the class when I could catch him in the right mood.  He'd want to snuggle, tell you stories, do a puzzle with you, or just be near you as he did his own thing.  It seemed like maybe all he needed was some attention and, like my friend before, be able to function in our classroom.  If we break all behavior down into three parts Antecedent, Behavior, and Consequence, and we agree that there is always all three, but sometimes they aren't apparent, I can say that, while I know there was an Antecedent, it was not always apparent.  Sometimes, I knew what was fixing to set him off and could move him or the other children before the behavior started.  Sometimes, there was not apparent Antecedent.  In typical behavior modification fashion, I tried varying consequences to find one that worked.  But it was never consistent.  One day, something would work, the next, he'd laugh at it.  Avoiding the antecedents that set him off was impossible.  Some were avoidable, but most were not.  And his behaviors were increasingly dangerous to himself and others.

The incident that led to my actually getting an assistant (well, getting her sometimes) was particularity scary.  Just before lunch it was our routine to clean up from centers, get out our mats for nap, and, if we had time depending on how long the rest took us, read on our mats until lunch.  This day, Bryan had refused to clean up when the other children did.  Knowing it would most likely upset him, I moved the mats of the children who slept in Homeliving to other areas.  Then I approached him, still playing, in Homeliving.  Very calmly, I told him that it was time to clean up and go to lunch.  We'd had a pretty good day that day.  I was hoping that if I was calm, he'd take the cue from me and clean up and it wouldn't be a problem.  Even knowing he'd probably be set off, I didn't (and still don't ) think that should have excused him from doing what was expected.  There are times we have choices and times we don't and I think that is something we need to teach young children.

So, I asked him to clean up.

He continued playing as if he hadn't heard me.

I turned his body so I could make eye contact and repeated that it was time to clean up so we could go to lunch.

As loudly as he could, he called me an "f"ing "b" and said that he didn't have to do what I told him and his daddy would come "get me."  Calmly (on the outside at least), I told him that I was ready to go to lunch and I very much wanted him to clean up so we could go.  He said, in his most authoritative and demanding voice "take me to the office!"

You see, I had made the mistake of giving away my authority once, in sending him to the office when I was feeling particularly defeated one day.  And he quite enjoyed the attention he got.  So it became a mantra to him, anytime he was in trouble, to say "take me to the office."  With the exception of the time he was sick, he never went to the office again.

Instead of taking him to the office, I called the office to ask that someone come take my other children to lunch so that I could continue to help Bryan make a good choice but my other children wouldn't miss lunch.  He responded by throwing his shoes at me from across the room.  Thankfully, he didn't hit any other children.  Sadly, it was because they knew to look out for things like that from him.

As I made sure no one was hit and read to other children while waiting for the person to come, he began pushing the Homeliving furniture down on the other children.  I'm not sure how I moved so fast, but I kept the child-sized refrigerator from landing on the child laying on his mat behind it.

I told the children to line up, someone would be there soon to take them to lunch.  The director came in.  She saw what had happened and took the class for me.  It was days later that the assistant came.  Honestly, she didn't have the training or the apparent desire to help with the children that needed extra attention.  But she did help with the others so that I could give the extra attention.

I remember on several occasions telling my husband that I would see that boy's face on the news one day.  I hoped not, but his parents weren't very interested in helping him, only in threatening discipline at home for his behavior at school.  For awhile they pretended it didn't happen at home.

His aunt told me different.

After a month or so, I thought that maybe with all the words he knew that he should not have known and all the threats he used to beat, "get," spank, whup, hurt, or kill others, that maybe he was being exposed to things he shouldn't and reported the family to CPS.  I hoped that, even if they didn't find any abuse or neglect, they might be able to suggest he get help too and the parents would listen then.

CPS sent me a letter that said nothing was wrong in the household.

Incidentally, the father-figure (who wasn't biological, but was the only father the child had ever known, and who I only met on one occasion) was out of the picture about a week before I received the letter.  I don't know if it was related.  Bryan's behavior improved a little bit after the father left.  Then it took a sharp spiral down.

There were several incidents.  My reflexes became quicker the longer he was with me.  He tried to bite, kick, hit, etc.  I would eventually put him in a hold until he calmed down.  He threw my glasses across the room once.  I have no idea how they came through unscathed.  He was belligerent and threatening.  At one point, I tried ignoring the behavior entirely.  I'd move him to a section of the room, and bring all the other kids to another section.  They'd try to tell me what he was doing, but I told them to pretend like he wasn't there.  Sometimes that deescalated the situation.  Sometimes it made it worse.  I never quite knew what would work.

One day, he took a block (one of those really long, wooden ones) and threw it because the boys in the block center said they didn't want to play with him (not that I blamed them, but before I could intervene in any way, the block was thrown).

It hit another little boy in the back of his head.

It's not very pleasant to have to tell a parent that their child might have a concussion because another child in your class threw a block at them.

Then Bryan wanted to know why the other child was crying.

The other children became increasingly mistrustful of him, never wanting him to play with him.  When he did play with them, 90% of the time he was sweet and played very well with them, willing to do what they others were doing, happy to be whatever member of the family they said he should be or to build whatever they decided to build, taking turns with art supplies or books or puzzles.

But they all knew there was that other 10% when he could hurt them.

I feel like I was judged, by other teachers, the parents, the office staff.  I feel like they thought it was me that was the problem and that I just couldn't handle him.  Most of the time, when we were with the other classes or when someone new was in the room, he was his normal, happy self.  Very rarely did others see the other side of him.  I began to think it was me, too.  I left that job after 5 months.  There were many, many reasons.  But he was part of it.  The fact that I couldn't get help for him.  The fact that I began to believe I was part of the problem.  (I no longer think that, but at the time I was too close to see it.) The fact that I couldn't get help in my classroom.

I can imagine the mother of a similar child must feel all of those things and more, with more intensity.

Bryan should be in 2nd grade by now.  I hope that he got some help.  I hope that someone advocated for him.  I hope I never see his face on the news.  But I wouldn't be surprised.

I think too often today, we get stuck in the PC world of Least Restrictive Environment and are too busy trying to figure out what is best and most normal for the person with special needs to realize it may not be best or normal for anyone else.  You know, I'm sad for the families that lost their babies.  But I am devastated for the babies who have to figure out how to cope with what they saw.  We don't expect grown-ups to deal well, and these babies don't have the emotional maturity to even start to process.

I think too often today we see people as two-part beings (mind and body) when we were created three-part beings (mind, body, and soul).  I think that a gun was no more responsible for any of the school shootings than the block was when Bryan hit the other little boy.  Inanimate objects cannot be responsible.

Issues aside, a person makes choices everyday.  If a person has proven incapable of making good, safe choices for themselves and others, the issues should not keep us from protecting everyone from those choices.

I do not propose to know the answers.  I was incapable of keeping a three-year-old from hurting others.  I just think that instead of wasting time talking about guns, we need to talk about people.  School tragedies have a history of being the catalyst that solves issues.  In New London, Texas, a natural gas leak and a spark blew up a school.  295 students and teachers lost their lives.  The response?  Oderize gas so people know it's leaking.  This tragedy in CT has the ability to be a catalyst.  Let us pray it is a catalyst for the right changes.

This transcript of a speech, given by Darrell Scott, father of two Columbine victims (one, a witness, the other, a victim) says things well.

I may have alienated people, both by the length of this post and the conclusions at the end, but I am glad to have put my jumbled thoughts into jumbled words.

Also, for someone who writes infinity better than I, read this.

Pageviews by Country

OK, so the US and Denmark page views make total sense.  I have followers in those countries.  I know them in real life.  But the others?  WEIRD!  Kinda cool, but kinda creepy...

I Got Yelled At

For not posting more.

I have nothing much to say though.  I started decorating for Christmas and have been working on other projects.  R and I did completely finish this one though:

I've used it already!  I need to get two 3-prong extension cords now (one for the toaster) so I can use it here, but it's on wheels too so I can roll it over where I want it.  If I had the extension cord, I could switch the mixer and bread machine and use it there where it's not in the way of anything.  Because neither the bread machine nor the mixer fit on my countertops, the uppers are too low. Not that they are extra tall, and not that it doesn't make it easier for 4'11" me to reach things, but it is annoying that things that are supposed to and normally do fit don't.

To further complain about the kitchen, the 20-30 year old dishwasher is dying and the 30-40 year old stove doesn't have a thermostat so it doesn't know when to turn itself down.  Plus it runs on pilot light and not electric start, which scares me a little.  And it has carpet.  BUT we can fix it all with dedicated fixing up the youth parsonage money.  It's just the house needs to be leveled (pier and beam) first, and seriously, the bathroom is worse and needs to go first.  I have serious doubts about how far the money will go...

Also, we did accomplish alot in Odessa.  Got everything we should need for a month.  And after some technical difficulties, God preformed a miracle (which I'm not even saying as a joke) and we spent exactly the amount of money we had planned on groceries.  Plus we put $50 of our gas money on an HEB card and got TWELVE CENTS OFF A GALLON at the pump.  From a 1/4 tank to full on a 20.5 gallon tank, it took FORTY EIGHT AMERICAN DOLLARS to fill up!  Craziness.

And C did not go with me to Odessa, she decided she wasn't up for it after all (especially when I told her Christmas shopping, etc. would also be happening and it might be a long day) but we did go over to C and D's house after we got back and had a mini-party with make your own pizza night!  That was fun.

Also, when we were in Odessa, the girl at Staples was rude and slow and made me angry and even though I really like Staples and might still buy a printer from them, I will never let the Odessa Staples copier and binder people ever do anything for me ever again as long as I live.  But the people at Office Depot copying and binding are very nice even though they had been there until midnight the night before because someone messed up and took an order they should have outsourced and then they had been there from 9 that morning and it was after 4 when I was there.  It took them 15 minutes to do what the other girl had not been able to do from about noon until 4 and said would still be "I don't know.  Hours, I guess" more until it was done.

OK, I'm not sure if this is really a post or not, but I am ready to go back to Christmas decorating since you currently have to manuever very carefully through my (previously clean) living room and only have two spots to sit, not to mention my laptop is sitting in the only empty square on my (previously mostly clean) table top.

I've Been Busy

I have completed quite a few projects in the last week or so.  (Granted, I had some help...)

As soon as I finish getting some "before"s together, I'll take some "after"s and show ya'll what all I've done!

Also, have I sent ya'll to this hilarious blog yet?  Because, really, Eli makes me laugh.  A lot.

Today, I (almost) finished my cabinet project (teasers below, R still has to make the drawer handle fit and one of us has got to put the hinges on), continued with my plate project (to be revealed in the "after"s), cleaned the kitchen (which is, of course, dirty again, just makes me mad), did a load of laundry, wasted a lot of time, listened to lots of Christmas music on Pandora, and got ready for the trip to the Big City.

Yup, it's that time again.  Once a month I make a pilgrimage to the Big City to stock up for the month since here in Podunk, West Texas we have limited shopping opportunities.  I can't go alone on this excursion because it's just too much.  (OK, I could, but I don't want to.) So last week, when R said he didn't think he'd be able to go, I asked my new friend C if she wanted to go.  She said she wanted to, but she was having her wisdom teeth out on Wednesday so she didn't think she'd be up for it.  Then, R changed his min or his plans or whatever it was and decided he wanted to go.  THEN, C texted me just a few minutes ago and said she was feeling pretty good and needed to go to town and she'd like to go tomorrow.  I'm just so popular. : )

So I spent a couple hours cleaning out the fridge, loading the car with various bags, boxes, and coolers, plus the stuff I need to take to town (a music book to be re-bound, and shelf supporter thingies I need to buy a shelf for), organizing the money (in a way reminiscent of Dave Ramsey), and making a list.  Or rather, lists.  One list for each money category.  And I saved the lists to my Google Drive and shared it with R (because his Android lets him edit spreadsheets, my iPhone does not) so now we are ready to get up and spend all day in the Big City!

It truly takes me a few hours to prepare and then all day shopping at different stores (groceries last) and putting away but it's nice to do it an be done.  We might run to the local store for eggs or medicines later this month, but we shouldn't have to go for anything else. (Not even milk because I said I was buying 6 gallons tomorrow and if R couldn't make that last for a month, including me using some for baking, he could buy more with his own spending money because that is ridiculous! I did the math and even if I used up 2 whole gallons, he'd still get to drink just over 2 cups a day!)

I'm pretty sure only one of you is even reading at this point, so I'm just going to stop.

Here are the cabinet teasers, as promised, plus a bonus:

This is the front of the cabinet, sans hardware and door a little saggy as the catch is holding it and not hinges.  We found the cabinet outside here when we moved in,  R rebuilt parts, sanded others, added wheels, Mom and I kind of whitewashed the top (but with paint), and I painted the rest.  It was too rough to ever get a perfect finish, so I went with a distressed finish.

The side.
The back.

The other side.  It's going to go in my kitchen.  My mixer, bread machine, and some baking stuff will go in/on it.
 And the bonus...

This started life as a light in our dining room.  Then some mean men took it out because it was old.  But they left it in the storeroom and I found it again!  I took it apart, cleaned it, and put it back together (so I wouldn't forget how it went).  Momma brought some other lamp bits and pieces when she came and we put it all together to get...

This!

Tada!  It even works!  (And Daddy only had to make one tweak and then add the turner offer thingy on the cord because you couldn't get to the other part to do that and I would've just had to plug and unplug it.  Once I get a table for it, it's going in my living room!

I Cannot Tell You How Many Of These I've Written...

Seriously.  How many posts have centered around all the things I haven't gotten done today?  I did pretty much read all of this hilarious blog.  Pay special attention to these gems. Seriously, they could've been written by my brother.  Except I'm not sure he would've had the patience/audacity/gumption to continue past the first few texts, much less into a second day!

I originally planned to do nothing today, because that is how most of my Sundays go.  BUT I did nothing yesterday, so I felt the need to transfer the goals.  It didn't work.  I do need to go take the clothes out of the dryer and move the clothes from the washer to the dryer so they don't mildew.  Mostly because that would just equal more effort later.  Also, I'm not quite sure why, but R has been completely incapable of using a cup for more than two swallows so all of our cups are either (clean) in the dishwasher or in the sink or randomly placed around the house where he has left them even more than he usually does.  So I should probably go empty the dishwasher and attempt to re-load it.

Also, because I cannot seem to get anything done without impending doom type goal setting, I decided that, since I've been completely focused on unpacking and decorating and getting rid of all the crap vintage items the woman who used to live here left (actually, a lot of it has been really cool or come in handy.  And by "a lot" I mean somewhere around 1/2.  Which is really not such a bad ratio if you think about it.) so we can actually us the storeroom as a storeroom and the middle bedroom as a bedroom (it still is about half full of stuff, but it's stuff I want to find a home for inside so...), etc., I should now focus on cleaning for a few days.  I decided (like 2 or 3 days ago) that if I cleaned 2 rooms a day for the next few days (skipping Sunday), I would be done by the time people came for Thanksgiving.  The problem, though, is that I don't feel an overwhelming need for my house to be spotless for the family that is coming (because of how much I love them, not because I don't).  But I do want to show off how different the house is since they were last here, so it'd be nice for it to be a little cleaner for that.  Especially since our puppy Starbuck has discovered a new love of sneaking into the little trashcan that basically has nothing but used tissues in it and then proceeding to MAKE IT SNOW (say that in a really excited part-lab puppy voice) in the living and dining room.  (Also, she destroyed her stuffed duck, Donald.  Part of the snow is his guts.)

Here is a better picture of her (see the bits of puppy snow?):

And, yes, she is named Starbuck not StarbuckS.  It's after Lt. Kara Thrace, call sign "Starbuck," from Battlestar Galactica.  Because we are that kind of geek.

I'm off to keep laundry from mildewing and hunt down cups.  We'll see if I accomplish my goals in typical down-to-the-wire fashion...

(Also, I'm really excited my Momma and Daddy and brother are coming for Thanksgiving!  I cannot tell you how many things we have discovered that we have wanted their opinions on.  Like if the wiring in this house will kill us.  Or what color to paint these square metal things.  Or how exactly we should hang the chandalier Mom found for THIRTY AMERICAN DOLLARS!!!!! in my craft room/guest room/black and white toile haven.)

Love to you all (unless you are a lurker I've never met, then I don't know if I love you),

A New Leaf

OK, so for two years I lived in the boondocks with no real internet access and gave up blogging.  Now, we have moved to West Texas and have internet at home!  So, I'm (maybe) going to take up blogging again.  I made a list before we moved of things I want to do after we moved (since I don't have a full-time job here, I've applied to sub, but they haven't called me yet).  Here it is:
Crafting
Sewing
Decorating
Creating trainings to teach childcare teachers
Taking hours needed to be qualified director
Blogging
Writing
Selling sewn and crafted items

So far, all I've done is decorating and blogging.

Eventually, I'll edit some video I've done of "befores" of the house.  Or maybe even take some stills from the videos.  I've got some pictures of the "after" so far as I've already done.

Also, I've given up my Etsy shop.  I may try to start it again, or I may just ignore the last item on my list.

I'm excited to say that my craft room is finally set up!  I still need some shelves for both decoration and storage, but otherwise I'm pretty well done.  The only two rooms we haven't really touched yet are the middle bedroom and bathroom.  The middle bedroom has been a catch-all for us.  It still has several things in it that I need to move so we can put furniture in there.  R's parents have furniture in his room at home that is supposed to be his.  It's family heirloom furniture.  I'm not really in a big hurry to get it because, at this point, it'd be a pain to get it cleared out.  We also haven't touched the bathroom.  The plan is to try to level the house this winter and then work on the bathroom in the spring.  It de-sperately needs a new sink, new floor, and new walls.  You'll see when I get the pictures up.

OK, I'm done for today.  Maybe when I get back in the swing of things I'll have a less disjointed post! : )

Etsy Shop!!!

OK, so I have started a new endeavor. It might seem like a really bad idea considering we have no internet at the house right now, but R just got internet on his phone and we have a friend who allows us to come abuse him for internet use and I can kinda jump on and check things after hours at work. So... I'm giving it a try! I just finished adding everything to the site. The prices are what I used when I tried to sell the same stuff at the Art Auction (let's not go down memory lane here) and from what I've been reading, I may be selling myself short. SO, these are special, introductory prices until I evaluate and decide what things are really worth!

On a completely unrelated topic, my glasses have a scratch RIGHT WHERE I LOOK THROUGH. We have scratch guard stuff and a free one time replacement warranty, but it's still driving me nuts because I haven't been able to get to the eye doctor's office when it's actually open.

And that's all I have for today.

Catch Up?

How bout I not try to remember everything that has happened in like the two months since we moved and just tell you what I've done this past week? K? Cuz I don't think even I can come up with enough words for the past two months. I have finally finished the last stages of unpacking.

I hope.

I spent last weekend organizing half our craft room/office/sink area plus closets and finished this weekend. Well maybe not finished because I only really organized my stuff and there's kinda a pile in the corner of Robert's crap stuff. So here is photographic evidence of my hard work. And that's all I got for ya. I'd like to tell you the entertaining tale of my Momma and I running through Hobby Lobby taking all the free craft idea flyer thingies and using up all my Daddy's patience for the day, but I just don't have the time because I'm off to start an Etsy store!

I don't know  what happened, but I can't rotate pics anymore. So, hopefully, you're using your phone or laptop to read this and can just rotate your screen... Sorry...

This is my bookshelf finally organized. With books and crafty stuff and a shelf of just...well...crap that has no where else to go...

This is the sink area. With my jewelry and makeup and all that kinda stuff organized.
This is a blurry picture of the rest of the bathroom stuff and half my color organized fabric and my tackle box of thread, also organized by color and grouped with any matching bobbins.

Seriously I was an organizing MACHINE. The other half of the fabric and the basket of stuff like scissors and pins and stuff that didn't fit into the jars at the left. Which there is a close up and less blurry pic down lower.

Here's what it looked like before. This pics aren't really in any particular order, can you tell?

Here's my feat of engineering. I really wanted these boxes up there but it wasn't working. SO, I got SUPER smart (seriously, ya'll, I was so impressed with this) and turned the two boxes of sweaters upside down. And it so all fits now. It's seriously a feat of engineering.

And my pet project. It's not done yet and I promise more pics of this because I'm super excited about it! I got the idea from one of the craft idea thingies from Hobby Lobby. I'll put up a pic of the idea and the finished project soon. I really cannot tell you how excited I am about this. I'm going to "back" the shelves (visual, not functional) and hang some of the jars and paint some of the lids. It's all sewing stuff. And the whole project-$20. : )

Ummm...Just Kidding?

I kind of lied to you.

Because I was going to be taking my no-internet induced bloggy hiatus but then this happened and I just had to tell you about it.  So sorry.

I was moving the washer and dryer just to be able to sweep a sock out from behind that I saw. As I moved the dryer, I saw a lot more was back there. Things I know was never ours. Lovely, no? Anyways, I also found this.

And just so you aren't thinking it's no big deal, let me show you this.

Yes, it's still full of fluid.

Underneath the dryer.

Can anyone say "fire hazard?"

The End.

Well...It's Done...Almost...

We are back at the apartment one last time to briefly enjoy the internet and clean. We've only got about an hour left here so I need to make this short and get to cleaning! Life is a crazy, messy thing right now but it is bound to slow down one of these days, right? : )

Moving

So have I mentioned yet how much I hate moving? Cuz I do. I really, really, REALLY do. All my stuff lost in boxes. And while some people see a packed box as an accomplishment, I see it as something that has yet to be moved and unpacked. Everything else is almost done, but I have not even STARTED the kitchen. I plan to get pretty much everything done but the kitchen today and tomorrow when the guys are moving stuff into storage, I'll do the kitchen.

Today, I felt a little exiled while the guys were loading from the front of the house and I was packing the back. BUT it's cooler back here. Tomorrow, I'll be more in the thick of things but it will be hot. Very hot.

And the only thing I hate more than moving: heat. Humid heat.

I'm thinking we'll get done in time though. As I speak (er, type) the guys are roofing the storage shed so we can move all the storage stuff into it tomorrow. I'm supposed to be packing but I'm taking a break. But, as I said, I'm nothing if not repetitious, or wordy, I think I can get everything but the kitchen pretty much done tonight.

I really need to stop wasting time now. But I don't want to! I HATE MOVING!!!

End of the Day

Can I just take a few seconds at the end of this day to let you in on a little personal insight I just gained? I've been feeling guilty about feeling tired. It's rather silly, but if I am tired before all the things on my to-do list are done, I feel guilty about being tired. I somehow got it into my head that it's only OK to be tired when everything has been done. And sometimes my body does not agree with that.  I'm too tired to think this through any farther, say, to a solution, but the little light bulb just came on and I thought I'd share.

Also, I just found a mobile blogging option and have attempted to use it. We'll see if it works. (Not this post. A post with a picture of a rainbow I took in town.)

My Weekend

So the TBCWEA's conference this weekend was AMAZING as usual! I got some really amazing information and then slept from about 1 or 2 yesterday afternoon till 8ish. And then slept last night. So, I am behind on packing (even more than before) and, though I really want to tell you about driving in Dallas and the conference, I am afraid I won't have time to post before the move and after we will be without internet for awhile...

The Results of My Research

So I read these books by Bodie Theone. There were two series and basically one was about the events leading up to WWII and the other about Palestine after WWII. It's fiction but her husband does tons of research for her books and, while it's a narrow view, they are very informative and interesting. (And, when finding that link, I totally realized there's more books than I thought! Oh my WORD, now I have to find them!)

So, because I can never have too much information and apparently have a slight problem with OCD, I started watching a documentary about WWII. It's done in Britain, so it's different than what we learn about in school. We kinda skip over, uhhh, half of it. It's like this: "There was Hitler. He was bad. He tried to take over Europe. There was a lot of fighting in France. Bunch of French cowards ran away. Then there was some bombing in England. Then, PEARL HARBOR. JAPANESE. WE HELPED IN EUROPE. WE WON!" But there's kinda more to it than that, you know? I'm finding out cool things about what happened before the USA got involved and the parts the USA wasn't involved in and it's really a different and broader view.

(Also, because it was made in Britain, sometimes I need subtitles for the people speaking English! The Italians, French, Germans, and Russians who are speaking English as a second language, I can understand. The English guys? They need to visit Henry Higgins. Seriously. "In Hartford, Hsomething, and Hampshire, hardly anything ever happens!" "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.")

Anyways, I'm sure it will surprise you all that I've become a little information obsessed and have been kinda doing research about WWII. It usually starts with me googling one thing, reading about it in Wikipedia, and then clicking on other things that catch my attention in that article. (It's the same reason Mrs. Hearbst would get mad at me in third grade when it took me a really long time to do the dictionary exercises. I would just get so distracted by the other interesting things on the page!) So I was reading something and came across "goosestepping." Now, I knew what goosestepping was, but I couldn't help myself. When I clicked it, I found out that there are some countries that still do it! Of course, this led me to YouTube.

I first found this video first.

Really, there's some major stretching that goes on before that. But extremely impressive. I especially am impressed with the stairs and the flawless transitions.

However, as we previously established, I couldn't stop there. Since that was the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Russia, I looked for a video of our guys doing the same at Arlington. Except they don't walk like that.

OK, remember how there was talking on that Russian video? And there didn't seem to be any reverence? Well, let me tell you, we don't do it that way in the good ol' US of A. No, sir.

Notice the quiet (well, except for the siren in the background).

Wanna know how we keep it that way? The guy asks for it in that last video. Wanna see how we enforce it?

This video won't embed. Watch it first and then the one below.

What cracks me up is that they say "it is requested that all visitors remain behind the chains and rails" and "it is requested that everyone maintain an atmosphere of silence and respect at all times." I'm sorry, requested? There is no arguing with that. None. Zero. I don't know if they would use deadly force to enforce those rules, but they sure sound like they could. With their bare hands.

So to sum up this post, I think this was better than the post I was going to write about the 4th of July. Because that post was gonna make fun of firefighters running away from fireworks that accidentally exploded too soon. Like, umm, on the ground too soon. (And they were complaining about wearing their full turnout gear on such a hot day! All they were doing is lighting a few fireworks, right? lol) But this? This is better. This country's reverence for it's fallen soldiers and the men protecting that reverence makes for a much more patriotic story!

Now, I'm off to make sugar cookies for my class tomorrow. Because I'm insane and don't have enough to do between packing for Dallas and packing to move and doing the laundry that will enable me to pack for Dallas. And water day. Oh, the insanity...

Guess What?

It's been a year and a month and six days since I started a blog. And I didn't even realize it till I read Jessica's post today. Oops. Oh, well. It's rude to throw yourself a party, anyways, right? : )

But, as I was thinking about blogging about the 4th, (I haven't yet, though, because the 5th I went swimming with my little friend E and her Momma M and E and I both got pink eye! So I've been sick and semi-packing, though I really should be doing lots more!) I started reading over some of my past posts. Good Lord, my life is deja vu!

Remember how proud I was of my packing accomplishments? I wish I could say the same this year. I think I'm stalling because I don't want to move. But I want to be in the position moving will put us in. So I really need to pack! Yet here I sit.

Anyways, in lieu of a new, original, and what I think will turn out to be hilarious post, if I ever get to, it post about the 4th, and also, in lieu of a little packing time (people! I'm gonna regret this in the next two weeks!!!) here are some of my favorite posts.

Sometimes, the comments are the best part! Also, I find it interesting that they are mostly from last year (the first half of my blog year) and that last year I wrote many more posts than this year (the second half). I started out strong with this blog thing but I've just not been keeping it up lately. A big part of that is probably the same reason I was so much better prepared to move last year. I just flat-out had more time. And, I worked really, really super hard and didn't let myself "fix" any of the posts I went back to read. So, yes, there are grammatical errors and things I could clarify. And, yes, it drives me a little batty that they're there.

And now I'm going to take a shower and then pack until I fall down from exhaustion. I might get a whole 10 minutes in.

I'm only kidding.

I'll get at least 20. : )
